For centuries the waters around the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador provided sustenance and economic benefit for many nations of Europe, North America, and later, Asia. Fishing fleets from these nations for the most part, came for one fish – the North Atlantic Cod.

In addition to these fishing fleets, the fishermen and women of Newfoundland and Labrador themselves came to depend on the cod. with their inshore and offshore fisheries, they provided food and the means to sustain their families from their catch year after year.

This exhibition showcases elements of the history of the Newfoundland and Labrador cod fishery – a retrospective and tribute – to all of those fisherfolk who contributed so much to the cod fishing heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Through the use of archival photographs, documents, marine charts and artifacts, we present a glimpse into the storied history of the Newfoundland and Labrador cod fishery.
