The Great War Rages On: Monchy-le-Preux, 1917
On April 14, 1916 the Newfoundland Regiment fought with bravery and distinction at the French village of Monchy-le-Preux. They suffered many casualties with many others taken prisoner. Then, against tremendous odds,10 soldiers (known as the Monchy 10) halted the advance of 200 Germans for many hours, holding the town for the Allies. Nine of these men served with the Regiment.
This pop-up display highlights soldiers’ harrowing stories from that dramatic day and the story of “the Monchy 10.”
