How this incredible showcase of our collection came into being.
In the spring of 2014, a team museum and archives staff set out on a quest, visiting communities across the province to make connections with people and to gather personal stories relating to Beaumont-Hamel and the First World War.

It is the middle of winter in Newfoundland and Labrador. The snow is piled high and the light is faint on the hills and cliff sides of St. John’s. For the last several months at the art gallery, our team of curators, managers, technicians, designers, guest writers, marketing and education staff have been working diligently on a new suite of exhibitions and publications. Very exciting times!
Although both sides of my family have a long history in Newfoundland, my parents were transferred to the mainland in 1967, when I was a boy of eight, and I did not live in Newfoundland and Labrador again until ten years ago when I returned to open The Rooms, nearly 40 years later.
