Education Workshops
Bring your class to visit our state-of-the-art facility for a hands-on, guided education program. Tied to learning outcomes, we have a variety of programs customized to grade level. Programs run from 90 minutes to 2 hours.

Rooms-Wide

What's in my Room?
Large Group Tour
Tuesday to Friday afternoons,
12:30 to 2pm or 1 to 2:30pm
Scaled to grades 4 to 12
maximum 75 students
Through a combination of worksheets, activities, and interpretation students are introduced to the Archives, Art Gallery, and Museum. Great for out of town groups looking for a structured visit.

Archives Programs

People at Work
Wednesday to Friday mornings,
9:30 to 11:30am
Grades K to 3, maximum 30 students
In this gentle introduction to the Rooms Provincial Archives, students will analyze photos and other primary documents depicting people at work in the early 1900’s. Through exploration of “people at work” of long ago, students are introduced to concepts of change, continuity, geography, and history in a local, immediately tangible context. Role play will round out the experience.

Your Passport Please!
Wednesday to Friday mornings,
9:30 to 11:30am
Grades 2 to 5, maximum 30 students
On this adventure, you’ll need your passport as students get a behind the scenes look at the Rooms Provincial Archives including the vault. Travel back in time – explore maps, photos, diaries, and newspapers along the way – find out how these sources are clues to our past!

The Life and Times of …!
Wednesday to Friday mornings,
9:30 to 11:30am
Grades 6 to 9, maximum 30 students
In this program, students use copies of originals documents from the Rooms Provincial Archives to explore the stories of individuals who lived in Newfoundland and Labrador during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. From the Spanish Flu, the First 500, Chinese Immigration, and the Churchill River – they all have a story to tell. Find out about individuals who experienced first hand these historic events.

Art Gallery

Combination Art Gallery Tour & Workshop
Tuesday to Friday mornings,
10:00 am - 12noon
Scaled to Grade, maximum 60
The Rooms Art Galleries are constantly changing, and there is always something new to explore and experience. Take an interest based tour with one of our energetic art gallery educators, and then create in the classroom with a workshop that links the exhibitions with a hands-on activity specific to your curriculum objectives. Tours and workshops can run from 90 minutes to 2 hours.

Museum Programs

The Inuit in Labrador Tuesday to Friday mornings,
9:30 to 11:30am
Grades 3 to 6, maximum 32 students
Helping students understand Inuit origins, their settlement patterns and traditional survival strategies, this program demonstrates how Inuit people developed technologies to fish and hunt, build homes, and travel on snow, ice and sea.

Home & School : Living in the 1900’s  Tuesday to Friday mornings,
9:30 to 11:30am
Grades 3 to 6, maximum 32 students

Students experience life almost 100 years ago by working in a one-room school, learning to hook mats, and doing laundry without electricity.

From the Ground Up: Introduction to Archaeology  Tuesday to Friday mornings,
9:30 to 11:30am
Grades 4 to 5, maximum 30 students

This workshop introduces students to the study of archaeology. Using tools and techniques, students learn how artifacts and sites are reconstructed to examine the culture of the people who left them behind.

Please Note: Education programs must be booked two weeks in advance. There is no fee for education workshops at The Rooms. Schools are responsible for transportation and adequate supervision.
