What's New? Lots!

Twenty-nine NFB clips from five films made in Newfoundland in the 1940s and 50s. View them with new, fast, streaming technology in our NFB Gallery.

Our new Salt-Fish Essays section. We've added significant new multimedia and textual essays:

Mrs. Abbie Whiffen's remarkable essay about growing up in the Trinity Bay outport of Caplin Cove-Hant's Harbour. Check out Growing Up 'Up in Cove'.

A brand new multimedia essay on the northern fisheries: the Labrador inshore salt fisheries of livyer, stationers, and mercantile rooms -- with a special focus on Battle Harbour: Fishing the Labrador Coast.

The Centrality of Women. This short essay that explores the roles of women in the salt fisheries has now been remounted with images from the PANL collection.

Our brand new Education Section. This is a new, experimental direction for the site that introduces the Newfoundland salt fisheries to grade-nine students using the Department of Education's Social Studies curriculum guidelines and textbook.

We have provided resources for teachers. These include: curriculum and web objectives, lesson plans that are directly tied into our site, and other resource links on and off of our site. Go to the Teacher's Area.

For students there is a lively multimedia essay with audio and video clips, online puzzles, a fish-landing game, and a quiz. Click here to check out the Students' Area.

And there is lots more...

Over 120 new photos spread around our salt fish essays, our Known Gallery and our Mystery Gallery -- especially from the Labrador coasts!
