NOTE: Below we provide a number of worthwhile links relating to Newfoundland fisheries and history. A number are links to general sites of interest, while others link to particular items, essays, or sub-pages within sites. We hope to continually update this page.  1) LINK INFORMATION

Title: Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Web Site
Description:  A site dedicated completely to the heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador. It contains "a wide range of information and analysis on the history, geography, population, culture, and society of the province." The intent is that the general public will find it accessible and interesting.

 2) LINK INFORMATION

Title: Paul-Émile Miot, Photographer 1827-1900.
Description:   Paul-Émile Miot took what are probably the earliest photographs of Newfoundland. A number of them are featured on this site, courtesy of the National Archives of Canada (NAC), Michael Wilkshire, Gerald Penney and the CMCS. This link leads to Michael Wilkshire's and Gerald Penney's site of Miot photographs and information. For those interested in viewing a more complete set of these images, and in the background of how this naval officer with a photographic hobby ended up creating some exquisite images of Newfoundland's French Shore, St. John's, etc., here is your site. We understand that it is soon to be updated with new Miot images recently acquired by the NAC.

 3) LINK INFORMATION

Title: The Fishing Station
Description:   "The Fishing Station" by Dr. Shannon Ryan of the History Department at Memorial University in St. John's. This paper comes to us via another
Canada's Digital Collections site, "Placentia: The Early Years" (see below). Dr. Ryan charts the development of Newfoundland from 1500 to 1800, from a "fishing station" for migratory mixed European fishing crews to an emerging Colony with a stable population. One of the paper's themes is the development of Newfoundland's various early fisheries.

 4) LINK INFORMATION

Title: Placentia: The Early Years.
Description:   This site focuses on a single community with a long and fascinating fisheries history. Inhabited by Peoples of the First Nations, Basques, Portuguese, Jersey men, French, and finally English and Irish fishing crews and settlers, there is a great deal of good material available on many themes, groups and individuals who fished, resided, visited, and/or fought here.

 5) LINK INFORMATION

Title: 1880's Newfoundland: A Pictorial.
Description:   This is another
Canada's Digital Collections site that explores a collection of photographs of Newfoundland dating from the 1880s. The images were likely taken by one of Newfoundland's earliest photographers, S.H. Parsons. Organized geographically and thematically, it has a range of excellent images depicting places in and around Newfoundland and Labrador -- a nice companion to our own site's collection.

 6) LINK INFORMATION

Title: Newfoundland and Labrador Registered Heritage Structures.
Description:   A
Canada's Digital Collections heritage structures site that highlights significant architecture from around the province. Search for a community or take a guided tour of places endowed with significant built heritage (Bonavista being one). There are many other outport communities included as well and these provide images of a variety of heritage buildings -- from homes to mercantile premises -- relating to the fisheries and fishing people's lives.

 7) LINK INFORMATION

Title: The Ryan Premises National Historic Site
Description:   The Ryan Premises National Historic Site is a restored merchant's premises in Bonavista, a community which is featured on our own site. The Premises house permanent exhibits that commemorate the East Coast Fishery and the role it played in Canadian history from the early 1500's to present day. At the site one can also visit the Bonavista Museum and pick up a finely crafted souvenir at the site's heritage shops. The Ryan Premises is an important stop for anyone interested in Newfoundland salt fisheries and outport culture. The linked web site above provides information on how to visit the Ryan Premises.

 8) LINK INFORMATION

Title: MI-Net
Description:   MI-Net is a site hosted by the Marine Institute. It was developed in partnership with STEM-Net and is dedicated to providing educational information on marine issues, science, technology, the fisheries and related topics. It is geared towards elementary and high school students but has a good number of interesting fisheries and marine links.

 9) LINK INFORMATION

Title: The Dictionary of Newfoundland English
Description:   This online dictionary is a most useful sub-section of Memorial University's "Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Website" (see link 1). The text of the entire dictionary is searchable by various methods which is an excellent feature.
