Title: Paul-Émile
Miot, Photographer 1827-1900.
Description: Paul-Émile Miot took what are probably the earliest
photographs of Newfoundland. A number of them are featured on this site, courtesy of the
National Archives of Canada (NAC), Michael Wilkshire, Gerald Penney and the CMCS. This
link leads to Michael Wilkshire's and Gerald Penney's site of Miot photographs and
information. For those interested in viewing a more complete set of these images, and in
the background of how this naval officer with a photographic hobby ended up creating some
exquisite images of Newfoundland's French Shore, St. John's, etc., here is your site. We
understand that it is soon to be updated with new Miot images recently acquired by the
NAC. |

Title: The Fishing Station
Description: "The Fishing Station" by Dr. Shannon Ryan of the
History Department at Memorial University in St. John's. This paper comes to us via
another Canada's Digital Collections site, "Placentia: The Early Years" (see
below). Dr. Ryan charts the development of Newfoundland from 1500 to 1800, from a
"fishing station" for migratory mixed European fishing crews to an emerging
Colony with a stable population. One of the paper's themes is the development of
Newfoundland's various early fisheries. |
