Each of the links above is a gateway to an essay, either multimedia or textual, that explore different facets of the Newfoundland and Labrador salt fisheries. To view an essay click on its picture above.  We have two new essays: one on fishing the Labrador coast and another very special essay by Mrs. Abbie Whiffen on growing up in a Newfoundland outport ("Growing Up up in Cove"). Other themes include the important role of women in the fisheries, the everyday work of processing inshore fish on the Island ("Hard Racket for a Living"), and a discussion of the many types of salt fish made around Newfoundland and Labrador ("The Classes of Salt Fish"). Some of the essays are "multimedia" employing images, video and audio clips along with text. The audio component features older men and women describing the salt fisheries in the first half of this century. A bibliography of many of the sources cited in these pages accompanies the essays.
