SELECT A LIBRARY
NOTE: To enter a library, click a library icon.  Be warned that many of the clips found in the libraries (that do not use streaming technology) are large -- ranging from 500 KB to 1 MB and will take some time to download depending on your connection speed.  In most cases when you click on a file it will open in a separate browser window -- so you can continue to browse the textual information in the original browser window while you wait.  In the audio library you can also download compressed (ZIP) versions of the clips.  In the latest version of our site, we have provided access to "streamed" formats of audio and video.  These files load and play much faster as the file is played while being "downloaded." Depending on your computer, your browser and browser version, you may need to download appropriate software from our downloads page to take advantage of these formats. Instructions and links are provided within the libraries. By the by, you will also require a sound card and speakers to hear audio.

Click the audio library icon above to enter the library.  It contains audio clips and transcripts from field interviews with men and women who worked in the Newfoundland salt fisheries from the 1920s to the 1950s. (Courtesy of the men & women interviewed, MUNFLA, and Mark Ferguson.)

Click the video library icon above to enter the library. It contains video clips in various formats from the 1948 film "The Handling of Salted Codfish," filmed in Bay Bulls and directed by Peter Plaskitt.
