The works presented in this area are drawn from the permanent collections in the care of The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery. These collections are comprised of over
8,000 works, both historical and contemporary, produced primarily by Newfoundland and Labrador artists. As well, the collections hold a number of significant works by Canadian and international artists.
The works featured in the colonnade galleries include portraiture and figurative work, landscape, Newfoundland and Labrador contemporary works, alongside a selection of large scale paintings in the main gallery. Collectively, the works highlight the depth and range of art making in the province and reflect the deep interest in our physical and social landscape.
In addition to the Provincial Art Gallery collection that was initiated in 2003, we hold in our facility vault at The Rooms the Memorial University of Newfoundland Collection that was started in 1961, and the Art Procurement Collection of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Through this unique arrangement, The Rooms is responsible for the largest and most diverse collection of Newfoundland and Labrador visual art.
