The Government Archives Section is responsible to acquire, preserve and making available for research, the archives of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and its public bodies. These functions are carried out in conjunction with the Information Management Division of the Office of the CIO, departmental Records personnel throughout Government, and the Public Records Committee (PRC), and are in accordance with the Rooms Act and the Management of Information Act (2005).
Records cannot be directly transferred to the Government Archives Section from Government sources. All records created by Government departments, agencies, boards, commissions or Crown Corporations must receive authorization for disposal from the Public Records Committee.
Archival Government records are available for research at The Rooms Provincial Archives, subject to the provisions of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
