The French Shore

This website celebrates the 500th anniversary of the French in Newfoundland by presenting a collection of images from the communities which reside along the French Shore, as well as hydrographic charts created by the French during the time when France held treaty rights over the shore of the island along the Northeast Coast and the Great Northern Peninsula.

Women in Sport
In 1895 a “Lady Bicyclist” was viewed cycling through the fog of St. John’s in the company of a young man. When questioned by a reporter about the propriety of the sport, the woman replied that she not only had the right to bicycle, but also believed in “woman suffrage and all the other privileges which the advanced woman says unjust laws deprive her of.”

Grenfell Collection Photo Exhibit
The records of the International Grenfell Association (IGA) were donated to the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador (PANL) by IGA representatives in June 1985. Since then, additional IGA-related material has been deposited at PANL from a variety of sources. Within these IGA records are a variety of record types, including textual records, photographs and photograph albums, negatives, cartographic and architectural drawings, film reels and a large collection of magic lantern slides.

Fish, Flake and Farm
September 5 – December 2
Atrium Vitrines

Photographer Edith S. Watson (1861-1943) spent the bulk of her life traversing and photographing North America. Her travels and images spanned the length of the eastern seaboard, however she focused her lens on rural Canada, and in particular, Newfoundland and Labrador. Her images were published in the New York Times, Toronto Star, MacLean’s and Saturday Night among other magazines and newspapers.

Her landscape photography is a testament to her keen sense of composition. Her subjects were very often women and she captured her female models in moments of reality that might otherwise have been overlooked. Edith Watson was a true documentarian who captured a sense of time and place in Newfoundland and Labrador through the eyes and lens of the outside world.
