At Home in Central Newfoundland
Discover the rich history of Central Newfoundland, from indigenous cultures thriving here 5,000 years ago to the great changes of 20th century industrial development. Exhibitions trace the story of resilient and resourceful early Indigenous Peoples of this land through the stone tools and other cultural objects they made. Exhibits also look at the history of the Beothuk, early European settlers, and the stories of a thriving, vibrant Mi’kmaq population in this area.

 Guest Curator: Emily Critch
Artists: Jerry Evans, Mardina Joe, Michael Joe Sr., Martin Jeddore, Megan Samms, Shanawdithit

Highlighting works from The Rooms Collections, this exhibition celebrates Mi’kmaw artists and craftspeople from, and connected to, the central region of Ktaqmkuk (Newfoundland). They are shared alongside pendants made by Beothuk ancestors and drawings by Shanawdithit. Ranging from practices like boat building, carving, drawing, weaving, textiles, and printmaking, the artists in this exhibition build upon a continuum of artistic and cultural knowledge. Their approaches are rooted in the shared territory of the Mi’kmaq and Beothuk, ensuring the preservation of these histories for future generations.

Image: Megan Samms. Shanawdithit's Burial Shroud (2013). Handwoven wool with tooth, animal bone, human hair, moose hide, hand carved wooden Beothuk-style canoe, bird wing, medicines (tobacco, sage, sweetgrass, cedar). 177 x 75 x 4 cm. The Rooms Collection.
